Defend Rojava: Open Assembly
#DefendRojava: A Democratic solution for Syria - Defend the Self Administration!
The developments that have taken place in Syria in the last few days are historic. The Assad regime, which has oppressed the Syrian people for more than half a century, is no more. It is not yet clear how things will continue in Syria. Turkish-backed mercenaries and Jihadist forces have gained power in the country and are trying to appear moderate.
Now, more than ever, there is an urgent need to create a new Syria-a Syria that embraces its diverse national, religious, and cultural identities while fostering democracy, justice, and equality for all its peoples.
Since 2012 the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) has been laying the groundwork for this vision of a democratic Syria. In this region, women, various ethnic groups and religious communities have united to fight against the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) and other jihadist groups and build a self-governing model which gives all of its peoples a voice, through developing a perspective for a sustainable and just peace based on women's liberation, grassroots democracy and ecology. Throughout this journey, DAANES has consistently emphasized its commitment to being an integral part of Syria.
This democratic model-shaped through the collective efforts of Kurds, Arabs, Armenians, Assyrians, Turkmens, and Circassians, Sunnis, Shi'ites, Alawites, Christians, Druze, Yazidis, and other Syrians-has faced relentless attacks by the Turkish state. Even as Syrians celebrate liberation from the Assad regime, the Turkish state exploits the nation's instability to target DAANES regions. Turkish aggression, including airstrikes and the mobilization of their jihadist proxy militias, poses a severe threat to the progress achieved by DAANES, to the future of Syria as a whole, and the broader region.
If Rojava is to stand a chance in this historic phase, we must defend the self-administration in Northeast Syria, the revolution in Rojava and stop Turkey and its mercenaries. While this war may be centered in Syria and the broader Middle-East, it has sent ripples around the world and includes the active participation of all major international powers. The autonomous administration in North and East Syria that grew out of the Rojava Revolution stands as a beacon of hope, a living example of the self-organization of peoples beyond the framework of the nation-state grounded in the liberation of women. The model of self-governance that has been developed stands as a political solution for many of the ongoing crises and wars across the Middle East.
It is crucial that we, as movements struggling to resist against and build alternatives to current hegemonic systems of Capitalism, Patriarchy and the Nation-State, rise up together against this oppression, and defend Rojava.
For this reason, we call an open meeting to discuss the current situation in Syria, and to co-organize actions on Sunday the 15th of December at 5pm in the Democratic Kurdistan Cultural Center (Liosion, 30)
