Remembering Sudan's October Revolution of 1964… the first popular revolution to overthrow a military regime in the Arab world and Africa
On these very days in 1964, the spark of one of Sudan's greatest chapters of struggle was ignited:
* 21 October 1964: Khartoum University held a seminar to discuss the crisis in southern Sudan. Police forces attacked the seminar and opened fire, leading to the martyrdom of student Ahmed al-Qurashi Taha and the injury of others.
* 22 October 1964: The funeral procession of the martyr turned into a massive political demonstration led by professors and students.
* 24-26 October 1964: Trade and professional unions (including railway workers) entered a comprehensive political strike that paralysed the country and brought Khartoum to a complete standstill. The "Front of Bodies" was formed, bringing together lawyers, judges, university professors, and unions, and demonstrations raised the slogan: "To the Palace, until victory."
✊🏾 A revolution made by students, workers, and women - it toppled a military regime and remains a lesson in our power to bring about change.

ذكري ثورة أكتوبر 1964… أول ثورة شعبية تُطيح بحكم عسكري في العالم العربي وأفريقيا
في مثل هذه الأيام من عام 1964، انطلقت شرارة واحدة من أعظم محطات النضال السوداني:
• 21 أكتوبر 1964: أقامت جامعة الخرطوم ندوة لمناقشة أزمة جنوب السودان، فهاجمتها قوات الشرطة وأطلقت النار، مما أدى إلى استشهاد الطالب أحمد قرشي طه وإصابة آخرين.
• 22 أكتوبر 1964: تحوّل تشييع جثمان الشهيد إلى مظاهرة سياسية حاشدة قادها الأساتذة والطلاب.
• 24 - 26 أكتوبر 1964: دخلت النقابات العمالية والمهنية (بما فيها عمال السكة الحديد) في إضراب سياسي شامل شلّ حركة البلاد والخرطوم بالكامل، وتشكّلت "جبهة الهيئات" التي ضمّت المحامين والقضاة وأساتذة الجامعات والنقابات، ورفعت المظاهرات شعار: "إلى القصر حتى النصر".
✊🏾 ثورة صنعها الطلاب والعمال والنساء، وأسقطت حكمًا عسكريًا، وما زالت درسًا في قدرتنا على التغيير.
